What is link popularity?

Printer-Friendly Format

Link popularity is the measurement of how many other websites link to your website (referred to as inbound links or "back links").  Many search engines use link popularity as a factor in determining how high (or low) pages from your site rank for specific keyword searches.

The mere quantity of inbound links, however, is normally not the deciding factor for page rank.  All links are not the same.  Link relevance (the measure of the context and content of the site that links to yours) is also very important for improved search engine ranking.

While some link popularity of a quality site can grow over time without a deliberate effort, to competitively increase the link popularity of your site, you would need to develop a linking strategy or link building campaign, which is a process for developing incoming, outgoing and reciprocal links.
