Your best brochure design idea will come after you define its purpose and function

Printer-Friendly Format

To develop your very best brochure design idea you should start by specifically defining the purpose and function of the brochure.   By doing this first, youll be able to make sure that your brochure ultimately delivers the best results and it will also help you avoid costly mistakes down the road.

The primary purpose of a brochure should be to doe everything possible to help sell your services to prospective customers.  A list of these purposes might include:

-- Entice a prospect to do business with you.
-- Educate the customer on the solutions you provide for their problems
-- Communicate a positive image about you and/or your company

Knowing these purposes in advance, before you start design work, will help you avoid doing too much on the brochure such as going over board with graphics, or not allowing enough white space to make the text easier to read.

Another way to keep your brochure design idea on target is to make a list of how you intend to use the brochure.    Here are some examples:

Will you mail it with cover letters?  If so, youll want to pick the right size and folds for the brochure to make sure it fits into standard envelopes.  Not doing so could cost you excessive postage costs when you mail.

Will a sales person hand them out at trade shows or conferences?   You may need to select a format that is easy to carry, or one that allows the sales person to flip through the various pages as he or she describes the benefits of your services to a prospect.

Will post them on community bulletin boards?   If so, you might want to select a format that lies flat more like a flyer for this use.
